These are African Trade beads known as “Christmas” beads, although no-one knows exactly why they are called this. Perhaps, they were named after their bright multi-colors and striped seed beads, which were very popular during festival season. They have also been known as “African Love Beads” (you can check out my original Love Beads page for history and reference), as well as “Peace Beads.” These have been identified as African glass “trade beads.” They consist of small, colorful Czech-made beads that are imported from Ghana, Africa.
This style of beaded jewelry is similar to my original “Love Beads,” inspired by the 60s American Hippie era, which is why the symbolism of this style is similar to the “Love Beads.” These African trade beads represent peace and goodwill. It’s traditional in African culture to wear multiple strands at a time. They can be bracelets, necklaces, and waist chains.
